The Correct Way of Applying a Face Mask

Along with the many advantages, the face masks of different types also carry some myths with it.

Face masks aren’t exactly new revelations in the world of skincare, but they have received a sudden spike in popularity in recent years. Read the information we provide below to learn all about the correct ways of using face masks.

Cleansing first

There’s no point putting a mask on a dirty face!

Before you apply your mask, it’s important to cleanse your skin to ensure there’s no dirt or bacteria on it. If you’re not wearing makeup, a no-rinse cleanser like micellar water is perfect as this will get rid of any dirt, makeup or oil that’s sitting on your skin.

If you’re wearing makeup or if it’s the end of the day, double cleanse, then gently pat your face dry before you apply your mask. Make sure your hands or application tool are also squeaky clean!

Using warm water and your favorite facial cleanser, remove any makeup, dirt, and oil. Do not apply moisturizer.

You can exfoliate before clay or hydrating mask, but you shouldn’t exfoliate before doing a peel or an exfoliating mask.

Before or after the shower?

Well, it depends on the type of mask you are using.

If you are using a sheet mask, the steam from the bath or shower negatively affects the cohesiveness between the mask and your skin. As a result, your skin ends up absorbing less of the nutrients that is delivered by the essence of the mask.

For a mask that will ultimately stay on your face and absorb into the skin (sheet mask or sleeping pack), you will want to apply it on a freshly washed face and not rinse it off – otherwise, you’re just washing away all the goodness of the mask.

For a wash-off mask, like a clay mask, you might find it’s less messy to rinse it off in the shower instead of over the sink.

The optimal time to wear a facial mask is during the night. Skincare experts say that the night is “golden time” for taking care of your skin since skin cells are fairly active during this time. The nighttime application will help your skin maximize the benefits of the mask.

Longer doesn’t mean better

In order to keep their skin looking as fresh and rejuvenated as possible, some women apply one of their facial masks and leave it on for more than twenty or even fifty minutes at a time.

The fact is that face skin generally requires not more than 20 minutes to absorb all the essential nutrients along with the essence from the used facial mask by you. That is why, after just a short amount of time, your skin looks moisturized and plump.

When you wear a facial mask for more than 20 minutes, the moisturizing effects start to fade, and, eventually, the mask will start to actually take away moisture from your skin. So, keeping facial masks applied for more than 20 minutes may even have a negative effect on your delicate facial skin.

Make sure you remove your mask after 20 minutes at most.

The dilemma of applying often

Many women believe that wearing a face mask daily can have adverse effects on your skin.

However, it all depends on your skin and the quality of the facial mask that you are using.

If you have problem skin, such as acne or excessive redness or eczema, consult your dermatologist before even using any type of face mask. If you do not have problem skin, a hydrating type of mask is generally safe to use. We would recommend using an exfoliating face mask or a clay mask just once weekly, and more often only if your doctor recommends it.

Skincare experts suggest staying away from using face masks daily if you have oily skin that is prone to frequent breakouts. Wearing a moisturizing mask one to two times per week will safely help prevent oil build-up and the accumulation of dead skin cells.

If you have dry or normal skin, wearing a facial mask more frequently is perfectly acceptable. Wearing a moisturizing mask two to three times per week will help brighten and hydrate your skin.

The instructions are there for a reason

It’s safe to assume that at one point in time, we’ve all been guilty of applying too much product. It’s so easy to be lured into the common skincare myth: the more you apply, the more effective it will be.

But actually, applying copious amounts of formula will not make it any more effective – you’ll just waste the product and you could overwhelm your skin and clog your pores. Always read the instructions, as they usually give a rough guideline as to how much you need.

Now you know the correct way to use facials masks and won’t fall for any silly rumors!
