Changes in your skin after baby

A woman’s skin goes through numerous changes post-delivery. While for some the skin changes are positive, for others it may not be a very happy sight.

While some women are fortunate enough to bask in the delivery glow for a lifetime, others may experience acne, pigmentation, stretch marks, puffy eyes and dark circles. With little or no care, it tends to get aggravated and can even lead to depression post childbirth.

Postpartum skin woes are not uncommon. After giving birth, new moms may notice more pronounced under-eye bags, lingering side effects of melasma, discoloration, dullness, or skin that’s covered in zits thanks to factors which may include fluctuating hormones, stress, sleep deprivation, and a neglected skin care routine.

That’s because self-care after childbirth usually takes a back seat, as all the focus is centered on giving special care to the baby. However, just 10 minutes for oneself can do wonders and help mothers to gain back their glow – and confidence, too.

#1 Acne

Acne breakouts during or post pregnancy are very common. High progesterone levels post pregnancy can cause pimples to break out. Skyrocketing hormones and intense fluctuations can lead to increased sebum production, which, when mixed with dirt and dead skin cells on the skin’s surface, can clog pores and cause breakouts.

Wash away excess oil to prevent acne on your face. Cleanse your face twice a day with a mild cleanser, which washes away dirt, oil and other harmful chemicals that could lead to breakouts on your skin. Use products formulated with acne-fighting ingredients, like salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide, to penetrate clogged pores and lift impurities.

#2 Melasma

Sometimes, during pregnancy, dark patches develop on the face. Some women complain of brown spots or hyperpigmentation post-pregnancy. These are called chloasma or melasma — a form of skin discoloration that’s prevalent amongst pregnant women.

This change in the pigmentation occurs due to the high level of pregnancy hormones in the body. These hormones gradually decrease after pregnancy.

While some brown patches may become less obvious, others may stay for good. Anyone with this condition must avoid constant exposure to the sun. Melasma typically fades on its own after giving birth, it may take a bit of time.

Sun exposure can exacerbate dark spots, so it’s important to lather on broad-spectrum SPF every day, while paying close attention to the areas of the face most exposed to sunlight: like the cheeks, forehead, nose, chin, and upper lip. In tandem with broad-spectrum SPF, dermatologists recommend a daily antioxidant serum.

#3 Skin discolored in spots

Nothing spells unhealthy more than a blotchy skin tone. Even though you might be healthy, post-partum brown spots can show otherwise. So if you want to look bright and perky, a good way to start is to correct discoloration.

A safe choice would be to use skin care products that contain vitamin C due to its skin lightening properties. This helps fade pigments with regular use. A step further from topical applications is to use gentle force to remove darkened skin cells on the surface. Exfoliating is an excellent way to break down these layers and reveal that glow that has been waiting underneath.

#4 Redness

Some new moms experience redness on their skin, and this is caused by fluctuating hormones.

The best way to manage this problem is to use a product that contains soothing ingredients, such as azuline, chamomile or seaweed. These also possess anti-inflammatory properties that can help relieve the swelling. 

Aside from the red areas, spider angiomas can also appear on your facial skin. This is caused by high estrogen levels during pregnancy. They appear on the face, chest, and occasionally, on the arms and belly.

This is characterized by red marks on your face, which is caused by the enlarged blood vessels.

Don’t worry, a spider angioma usually disappears by itself sometime after pregnancy.
